Protecting Black Women from EDCs in our Hair Products
Educating and training Black hairdressers to protect themselves and their clients from the harms of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals(EDCs) in our hair products.
What are Endocrine-Disruptive Chemicals?
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances in the environment (air, soil, or water supply), food sources, personal care products, and manufactured products that interfere with the normal function of your body's endocrine system.
The endocrine system is a network of glands and organs that produce, store, and secrete hormones. When functioning normally, the endocrine system works with other systems to regulate your body's healthy development and function throughout life. Since EDCs come from many different sources, people are exposed in several ways, including the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. EDCs also can enter the body through the skin and hair.
EDCs can disrupt many different hormones, which is why they've been linked to numerous adverse health outcomes including alterations in sperm quality and fertility, abnormalities in sex organs, endometriosis, early puberty, altered nervous system function, immune function, certain cancers, respiratory problems, metabolic issues, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, growth, neurological and learning disabilities, and more.
What is GPE doing about EDCs?
Black Hair Care Campaign
Our 4-week digital media campaign will work to spread information about EDCs and other chemicals found in hair products often used by Black women. Look out for our campaign launch on IG in July 2023
Black Hair Pop-Ups
GPE is doing pop-ups all across Atlanta to different hair stores, health and beauty brands, and more to help spread awareness about EDCs, answer questions, and giveaway healthy hair products.
Black Hair Care Cohort
We're conducting trainings at 10 hair salons across Atlanta to help educate and train Black hair stylists about EDCs and how to protect their clients from EDCs.
